Scholarships

There are a variety of scholarships for military-affiliated students. These scholarships are provided by GW, Military and Veteran Services, and various outside sources, ensuring a range of opportunities to support your academic journey. Explore these scholarship options to find the financial support you need to succeed at GW.

Military and Veteran Services' Learning Supplement

Military and Veteran Services’ Learning Supplement application open annually in the Fall and can be used for the cost of education (tuition, fees, housing, books, or supplies). Awards are automatically applied to the Spring term, but can be applied to either the upcoming Summer or Fall terms in the same calendar year, at the request of the recipient. This award does not automatically renew every year. Students may reapply each year they wish to be reconsidered.

Eligibility
  • Enrolled in a GW degree program and attending classes at a rate of pursuit of 3/4 time or higher.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and passing Satisfactory Academic Progress.
  • Military-Affiliated Students* NOT eligible for Rogers STEM Scholarship, Yellow Ribbon Program, or Veteran Readiness & Employment (VR&E/Chapter 31).
  • Qualified students do not need to be using any sort of Department of Veteran Affairs or Department of Defense benefits.

NOTE: Proof of eligibility (redacted DD-214, copy of a valid military ID card, etc.) will be required if not using any GI Bill® Benefits.

*Military-Affiliated Students = active duty, veteran, National Guard, Reserves, or the dependent spouse/child of the aforementioned, and ROTC students with a signed contract.

Selection Process
  • Graduate and undergraduate students are eligible to apply. Applicants will be reviewed based on both the content and grammar of the essay and resume.
  • Undergraduate and graduate students will not be reviewed against each other.
  • Recipients will be notified by email in late Fall.

 Opens: Monday, September 2, 2024

Submissions Due: Sunday, September 29, 2024 by 11:59 PM EST.

Each student should submit a resume and answer two essay questions (350-500 word limit per essay).

Pat Tillman

Pat Tillman Foundation

The mission of the Pat Tillman Foundation (PTF) is to unite and empower remarkable military service members, veterans, and spouses as the next generation of public and private sector leaders committed to service beyond self. PTF enables these military-affiliated students by providing educational tools and support needed to reach their fullest potential as leaders--no matter how they choose to serve.

The scholars chosen are passionate about lifelong learning, committed to leading by example, and determined to unite others and advance ideas that change the world. Each year, PTF selects up to 60 scholars. To date, 21 military-affiliated student from GW have been selected as Tillman Scholars. 

Application for the 2025 class of Tillman Scholars will open in November 2024.

 

 
Gilman Scholarship

Gilman-McCain Scholarship

Child and spousal dependents of active or activated United States military personnel and who receive Title IV student assistance can apply now for the Gilman-McCain Scholarship. Recipients are awarded $5,000 to be used toward the cost of study abroad or international internship programs. Supplemental awards from $1000-$3000 are also awarded to students studying critical need languages or conducting STEM research abroad. The Gilman-McCain August 2024 application is for applicants whose study abroad programs or international internships start between September 1, 2024 and April 30, 2025. The application deadline is Thursday, August 1, 2024 at 11:59pm Pacific Time.

GW is a top-producing school for Gilman recipients and students are encouraged to contact the  Office for Study Abroad or schedule an appointment with Kevin Walden in the Center for Undergraduate Fellowships and Research to receive more information and guidance on completing an application for the Gilman-McCain Scholarship today.
